Blue Ginger
The locals' favourite, for good reason. If you're a fan of South East Asian and Polynesian street food, this place never disappoints. My personal must-orders are the Smoked Kahawai Wontons, Kapow Chicken, Indonesian Beef Rendang and the Bang Bang Chicken Salad. Honestly, you can't go wrong.
A little PSA: they aren't licensed, so you won't be blowing your budget or drinking a bit much here.
Modern beach kitchen
Basker
One of the newest additions to our waterways and making a name for itself. Describing themselves as a modern beach kitchen and restaurant, Basker serves elevated Kiwi cuisine, delicious share plates, great coffee and locally crafted beers in a stunning waterfront setting.
There's a playground right next door, making it the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely lunch while the kids entertain themselves. Oh, and did I mention the $10 cocktails? Need I say more.

Eggsentric
Staying on the “Darkside”, aka Cooks Beach or Flaxmill? Or just want to take the passenger ferry and meander along the road a little? This is your spot.
A big shout out to “The Egg”, as it's affectionately known by locals, for making the decision to stay open throughout winter after historically closing during the cooler months. Described perfectly by Google as a quirky, artistic coastal gem that captures a relaxed Coromandel vibe, it's a beautifully chaotic, charming and eclectically decorated haven that feels like a blend of art gallery, rustic garden and classic Kiwi bach.
The Eggs Benny and the Spanish Eggs. The Carrot Cake is a longstanding customer favourite, according to many.
Contemporary waterfront dining
Marina Bay
Clearly I have a thing for Asian fusion. A highly rated, contemporary waterfront restaurant that beautifully blends a modern dining experience with relaxed coastal views. With a huge menu there's something for everyone, even the kids, whether you're sharing plates with friends or looking for a relaxed lunch or a lovely dinner. The wine pours are generous and the staff are soooo lovely.
The Fried Chicken Thai Salad. It has officially earned a permanent spot on my weekly lunch rotation, and it's also available in beef and tofu.

Okay, we might be a little biased here, but no visit to Whitianga is truly complete without popping into Gathered Collab. One of our absolute favourite things is meeting customers who have either just stumbled across us for the first time, or who have only ever shopped with us online. Being able to welcome you through our doors and help you discover everything in person makes us happy.
We love seeing groups of friends on a girls' weekend wandering the shop, chatting, laughing and treating themselves to something beautiful. Hearing your lovely compliments about the space does make our hearts quietly swell with pride, if we were to be totally honest.

And no, you definitely don't need to be a local to join the circle. Plot is a super welcoming community book club with a beautifully simple concept: just read the monthly pick and show up.
The logistics are easily tracked via their Instagram page, leading up to a monthly Thursday evening gathering at Basker. It's the perfect recipe for a night out: great drinks, lively book chat and, naturally, a healthy dose of banter.
If your winter getaway stretches into the end of the week, it's a fantastic, low-pressure way to spend an evening and mingle with some fun locals.
Best walks around Whitianga
And we can't forget the walks, the bays and the beaches, one of the absolute best things about visiting our area in the winter. You'll often have these incredible spots almost entirely to yourself.
The cooler temperatures also make adventuring so much more enjoyable. No scorching sun, just fresh air, incredible scenery and the occasional excuse to stop and admire the view, or catch your breath.
We all know the usual go-to spots of New Chums, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, but here's a handful you may not know about which truly are beautiful, in both the Cooks Beach and Kūaotunu areas.
Easy to moderate · Pick your path
Shakespeare Cliff Lookout & Lonely Bay
This is one of those legendary local spots, and my regular, that absolutely never gets old. To reach the top of Shakespeare Cliff you can take your pick of paths: wander peacefully through the native bush from Cooks Beach, conquer the stairs from Flaxmill Bay for a quick leg burn, or take the easier road route, which you could also bike. Whichever path you choose, you'll be greeted with breathtaking, panoramic views across Mercury Bay that will make you forget all about the steps you just climbed. My soul immediately feels calm when this view comes into sight.
The short detour down to Lonely Bay. It is hands-down one of the most peaceful, magical little beaches in the Coromandel, beautifully tucked beneath pōhutukawa trees with dramatic white cliffs framing the sand. Pack a little picnic or just sit on the sand and soak up the serenity. On a crisp winter's day, there is every chance you'll have this entire slice of heaven completely to yourself.
Challenging · Sturdy footwear
Maramaratotara Bay Track
What can start out as a leisurely Sunday walk can end up as more of a comical off-roading adventure with this one. This track is guaranteed to get your heart rate up and your legs burning. Starting from the Flaxmill Bay side, it's a beautifully maintained climb with plenty of stairs that lead to some seriously stunning viewpoints over the bay, even on a cloudy day.
But the real core workout comes from laughing on the way down toward Back Bay. Let's politely call this half of the track “character-building”. If it has rained recently, it turns into a premium nature slide, so sturdy footwear is non-negotiable. Unless you want to permanently ruin your aesthetic, we highly suggest leaving your fresh white sneakers at home.
This is the ultimate track for making your partner or friend walk directly in front of you, purely so they can act as a human shield if you start to slide.
Moderate · Good cardio
Rings Beach Loop Track
Nestled beautifully between Matarangi and Kūaotunu, this loop serves up a fantastic cardio workout paired with absolutely jaw-dropping panoramic views of the ocean and dramatic mountain ranges.
The best part? This track is a total testament to community love. It was dreamed up by local retired residents back in 2010 and built entirely by volunteer labour to give everyone a glorious outdoor space to connect with nature. Since then, they've partnered with local school kids to plant over 4,000 native trees to bring the birdlife back. Walking through this regenerating bush feels like a warm hug for the soul, even if the steeper hill sections have your lungs asking for a brief timeout.
Easy · Practically flat
Bluff Road Coastal Walk
If you want those million-dollar coastal views without the intense hill-climbing cardio of the loop track, the Bluff Road Walk is your perfect match. Winding lazily right around the coastline all the way from Rings Beach, this track serves up absolutely stunning, unobstructed ocean vistas with practically zero incline.
It is an incredibly easy, breezy stroll that is perfect for a slow morning with a takeaway coffee or a peaceful golden-hour wander. As you amble along, keep an eye out for the narrow paths leading down to the rocks. This stretch is famous among locals for hiding some of the best, most secret fishing spots in the area. Whether you bring your rod to catch dinner or just want to sit on the rocks and watch the waves crash, it is pure, unadulterated Coromandel bliss.
