Women in Business

Featuring Georgia from Bored George

At Gathered Collab, we're proud to work with so many incredible women who are building businesses, creating beautiful products, and doing it all with heart, hustle, and creativity. This month, we're shining a light on one of the amazing women behind the brands we stock - Georgia, founder of Bored George. We sent her a few questions to learn more about her journey, the lessons she's learned, and what keeps her inspired. Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us a little bit about your brand and what made you want to create a sunglasses label?

Where do I start... This year, Bored George is turning 6, which is so hard to believe. When the idea first came about, I was a manager at a physiotherapy clinic, bored out of my mind and craving some sort of challenge or change. That's when I looked into importing a product to start selling. Never intending for it to become a business—I think a lot of businesses start off this way—with no intention, but the passion for it just grows and surpasses any expectations anyone, including yourself, has for it.

Sunglasses as a product—I fell in love with them when traveling overseas, as they gave me a new confidence I had never felt before, almost like a mask for different personalities. Which now ties into our mission: "Our frames are designed to make a statement, featuring playful and bold shapes that reflect mood, attitude, and personality."

Do you remember the first time you saw someone wearing your sunglasses? What was that moment like for you?

I don't remember specifically, but even to this day, I get just as excited. With every person I see, the joy never diminishes. It still gives me such excitement and makes me so grateful that people choose my brand, my designs, and have chosen to support a small business over some of the other big guys out there. More recently, I've been to a few events where 1 in 20 females would be wearing them, and that has been a massive pinch-me moment.

Tell us a little bit about your brand and what made you want to create a sunglasses label?

Trust your gut. And I know that's a piece of advice that a lot of people give out, but it's one I'm still learning, as it's definitely a self-discovery journey—trusting yourself and your feelings over, sometimes, professionals or others who, in theory, may have more experience. I'm still not great at trusting my gut straight off the bat, and lately, I've had a few missteps where I ignored a gut feeling I had because others told me what was better for me and my business. And it's come back to bite me. It's a journey to understanding why your gut is there, and the better you become at listening to it, the stronger you are as a business owner.

Running a business is no small thing. What keeps you going on the days where motivation might be a little low?

Other than the fact that this is my livelihood and it must work (haha). The passion for what I'm doing and seeing the business grow is enough to keep me going. There's a lot that plays into it: the amazing people I work with who make me want to go to work each day, the feeling of overcoming challenges (which are daily occurrences), and knowing we are producing a product that others love and that gives them a new confidence.

What's been a 'wow' moment for you so far? The kind of thing that makes all of the hard work worth it.

Over the years, there have been numerous achievements, and I must admit, I'm often guilty of not celebrating the successes and wins as much as I should. In the midst of the daily grind, it's easy to overlook these moments. However, looking back, one standout achievement for us was winning the Girls in Business Best in Marketing award.

I know awards shouldn't be the sole source of gratification, but this particular recognition came at a time when I was seriously questioning my marketing decisions and the direction we were heading. Receiving that validation—that we were on the right track—was incredibly timely. It not only boosted my confidence but also reaffirmed that others look up to us and our marketing efforts.

This experience taught me the importance of acknowledging and celebrating our accomplishments, no matter how big or small. They serve as reminders of our progress and the impact we're making.

If your brand had a personality, how would you describe it in three words?

It's funny, as the first thing I thought to do was to ask this question to ChatGPT, it knows my business better than anyone else, inside and outside. This is what it said:

Bold
Bored George frames are unapologetically expressive—designed to stand out and make a statement. This boldness reflects a confident, fashion-forward attitude that resonates with individuals who aren't afraid to be seen.

Playful
There's a sense of fun and irreverence in Bored George designs. From the names of your frames to the cheeky tone of your marketing, Bored George doesn't take itself too seriously—inviting wearers to embrace their quirks and moods.

Empowering At its core, Bored George is about giving people the confidence to express themselves. The mission to reflect mood, attitude, and personality through eyewear empowers customers to own their individuality.

What does a typical day look like for you? We are talking the good, the chaos, the caffeine…

That’s probably what I love most about running Bored George, every day brings something new.

My mornings kick off with a V No Sugar Blackcurrant; without it, I'm on struggle street. Then it's onto emails and admin tasks. Mid-morning, I head into town to record an episode of my podcast, Bored to Boss, which I co-produce with ZM.

Afternoons are dedicated to content creation for our Instagram, TikTok, and advertising on Meta and Google. It's a constant cycle, always requiring fresh content to keep our audience engaged.

Towards the end of the day, Jess (my employee) and I touch base to discuss upcoming priorities and plan for the rest of the week.

The unpredictability keeps things exciting, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone thinking about starting their own business?

Beyond the classic "just get started" advice, here's a nugget from my journey: get comfy with failure. Seriously, things won't always go your way, and that's okay. In business, setbacks are part of the package. The key? Don't dwell—learn, adapt, and move forward. Every misstep is a lesson in disguise, building resilience and sharpening your edge.

And just for fun — quickfire style…

Bold frames or timeless classics? Bold all the way! You won't ever see me in our more understated styles.

Sunrise or sunset? Sunset, I'm not a morning person.

Beach or city? Beach 100% — get me to a beach on a sunny day and I'm in my version of heaven.

Current playlist/artist on repeat? Chappel Roan — the office is probably sick of it. Outside of the office, I’m a podcast girlie.

Coffee order? Iced Latte.

Dream holiday destination? Rarotonga — we’ve been once, and it’s the only place I have on my list to go back to. It was just perfect for my fiancé and I.

One word your friends would use to describe you? Driven.

A huge thank you to Georgia for sharing her story with us and for bringing her beautiful brand, Bored George, to life.
